Shurniak Gallery Inc. is a private not-for-profit charitable foundation operating under the name Shurniak Art Gallery. Its staff and volunteer greeters are dedicated to ensuring that visitors are warmly welcomed to the Gallery, and they are readily available to provide background information about the art collection.

Located in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, the Gallery has become a vibrant hub of cultural activity in the agricultural area of southern Saskatchewan. Shurniak Art Gallery respectfully acknowledges that it is situated on Treaty 4 territory, traditional lands of Indigenous and Metis people.

The gallery is the result of the vision of William (Bill) Shurniak, who was born and grew up in neighboring Limerick, Saskatchewan. The Gallery houses a significant portion of his extensive private art collection from Canada and other countries.

Construction of the gallery, designed by architect Gerry Norbraten of Regina, began in 2003 on the site of the former Lodge Hotel. The general contractor was Leeville Construction of Assiniboia. The impressive entrance to the gallery features a long cedar stripped barrel ceiling that extends beyond the front door. The exterior is complemented by beautifully landscaped grounds and a sculpture courtyard.

Seven gallery rooms are named after former and existing villages in the RM of Stonehenge. The gallery is dedicated in memory of Bill Shurniak’s parents, John and Anna Shurniak, and the scores of people of their generation, who settled in Southern Saskatchewan. Their portrait above the fireplace in the Old Post room serves as a tribute to that generation of very special people.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1565888338643{padding-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Bill Shurniak’s permanent art collection, comprised of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, is rotated from time to time. During its first five years of operation, the gallery displayed its Opening Exhibition, followed by an Australian Art Collection. Next, visitors had an imaginary trip, Around the World in 88 Minutes, and in the fifth year 90 Saskatchewan artists participated in a Prairie South Art Exhibition. Since 2010, invited emerging and established artists have been featured for short term solo exhibitions. In addition, several OSAC (Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council) exhibitions of Saskatchewan art come to the gallery each year, and the Group of Ten Photo Competition is held annually.  Special exhibitions have been mounted for the 2012 Centennials of Assiniboia and Limerick, the gallery’s 10th Anniversary in 2015, and Canada 150 in 2017.

Since 2015, Shurniak Gallery and Assiniboia & District Arts Council have co-hosted an Artists’ Retreat for one week each summer.  The Retreat enables artists to work on individual projects, collaborate together, and enjoy the mentorships which develop.  Participating artists also contribute to a group exhibition at the Gallery.

Special community events also include art openings, concerts, receptions, book readings, and meetings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1565889880726{padding-top: 5% !important;padding-bottom: 5% !important;background-color: #e8e8e8 !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1568402684020{padding-right: 150px !important;padding-left: 150px !important;}”]

“I want the gallery to be a place that people will feel free to visit frequently; a place where they will be able to linger, relax, and enjoy the paintings.

Art is to be appreciated by people of all ages and walks of life.”

It was established as the permanent home of this private collection of international and Canadian paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, amassed over a period of about 50 years.

The diverse international collection includes a substantial number of paintings, scrolls, rugs, and furniture from China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. European art is well-represented. Australian selections include examples of Aboriginal paintings and carvings. The Canadian selections are eclectic and wide-ranging. Local Saskatchewan art adds regional interest to the anthology.

An interesting assortment of handcrafted items enhances the permanent collection. Outdoor sculptures by renowned artists Robert Davidson and Joe Fafard are featured in the grounds of the gallery. A library of art books is available for visitors to browse through while relaxing in comfortable sofas and chairs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1447688555128{padding-top: 80px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Staff” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:38|text_align:center|color:%233d3d3d|line_height:1″ google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_separator_2 style=”line_symbol” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-users” color_line=”#e0e0e0″ color_symbol=”#666666″ padding_bottom=”” sep_width=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1447688777669{padding-right: 60px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;padding-left: 60px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_employee image=”73″ colors=”custom” description_bg=”#f7f7f7″ position_color=”#3d3d3d” separator_color=”#dbdbdb” description_color=”#494949″ desc_border_color=”#ededed” sc_bg=”#f7f7f7″ sc_color=”#3d3d3d” name=”William (Bill) Shurniak” position=”Founder and Chairman/President”][/vc_employee][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_employee image=”74″ colors=”custom” description_bg=”#f7f7f7″ position_color=”#3d3d3d” separator_color=”#dbdbdb” description_color=”#686868″ desc_border_color=”#ededed” sc_bg=”#f7f7f7″ sc_color=”#474747″ name=”Jared L.
